"Managing a natural resource: the case of fisheries" by Ivar Ekeland

Lecture by Ivar Ekeland, as part of the opening day of the doctoral school of Université Paris Dauphine - PSL (SDOSE).

Fish are the main source of proteins for hundreds of millions of people, and they are disappearing at an alarming rate. The fishing industry has now reached the scale where it can empty the oceans, and major fisheries, such as the cod fishery in Newfoundland, have already collapsed.

Is there a way to manage fisheries so that human and fish can live together on this planet ? I will show how different legal structures, managing the fish as a common good, or having a competitive market for fish, or a monopoly market, lead to vastly different outcomes.

Ivar Ekeland, mathematician, professor emeritus and President of Université Paris Dauphine - PSL from 1989 to 1994, is celebrating his 80th birthday in 2024.

Event limited to members of Université Paris Dauphine - PSL (PhD candidates, students, researchers, teachers and staff members).
