Research Project
This project researches the determining factors behind the lack of professional advancement of women in scientific careers.
The project will take place at two universities: Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) in Poland and Chernivtsi National University in Ukraine. The project will look at the careers of women in Math, Computer Science, and Physics.
Our research will investigate several elements: gender stereotypes, different variations of the glass ceiling, work/life balance, and the relationship between the careers of women in the sciences and increased awareness among scientists of the determinants of gender in career advancement. These factors have already been extensively studied. A less-studied factor is the subtle and unspoken symbolic violence that we will investigate in this project. We will employ sociological research methods such as statistical data analysis and interviews in our project.
We will interview men and women in order to discern the similarities and differences in their perception of what constitutes a career in the sciences. The theoretical framework of this project stems from symbolic violence (Pierre Bourdieu, La Domination masculine, Paris, Seuil 1998) and neuroscience (Cordelia Fine, Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society, and Neurosexism Create Difference, WW Norton & Company, Inc. New York 2010). We think that these are “conditionally connected” domains.

Grażyna Gajewska
Professor of Literature at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland.
Grażyna Gajewska is Professor of Literature at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland. She worked at the European Cultural Institute for 18 years. She now conducts research and teaches at the Institute of Cinema, Media, and Audiovisual Arts. Her research centers on the methodology of humanistic anthropology, interdisciplinary methods for analyzing contemporary culture, multi- and metaculturalism, gender studies, transhumanist studies, and post-humanist approaches.
She is the author of four monographs, several edited volumes, and numerous articles. She is in charge of multiple research projects in Poland and abroad and a member of two gender studies research teams at AMU: Interdisciplinary Research Center on Gender and Identity and When Science is a Woman.

Edyta Głowacka - Sobiech is a professor of History of Education at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland. She has worked at the Education Studies Department at UAM for many years.
She is author of three monographs, several edited volumes, and numerous articles. She has been in charge of several research projects.

Iwona Chmura - Rutkowska is a professor of Pedagogy and Sociology in the Department of Educational Studies at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland.
Chmura - Rutkowska is an expert in social education sciences and gender studies. Among her research interests are: the critical analysis of implicit and explicit aspects of everyday life in educational institutions; the functions, results, and mechanisms of exclusion and the reproduction of educational and social inequality.
Her research primarily focuses on the psychological and social mechanisms and the effects of social conditioning and educational practices that reinforce gender stereotypes. She has published on the sociocultural conditioning of gender identity, violence and critical analysis of the discourse on femininity and masculinity in popular culture, educational programs, manuals, everyday life, biography, and narration.

Katarzyna Wala
Cultural anthropologist, journalist, tracker of forgotten traditions, promoter of herstory
Katarzyna Wala is a cultural anthropologist, journalist, tracker of forgotten traditions, and promoter of herstory She founded The Bloomerki, a herstorical reconstruction group. She has made popular science films and documentaries in the Adam Mickiewicz University studio and is a collaborator on the “When Science is a Woman” project.
She is the director of «Kominierz», an ethnographic film that won a Göttingen award, and the winner of the Golden Copernicus for the popular science film, “High Pressure in Science and Nature.” As a member of AMU’s marketing team, she helps researchers with research communication and outreach. In 2020, she won a Głos Wielkopolski medal for Cultural Animation, a prestigious award honoring Polish culture artists and activists.
Liudmyla Zagoruiko
Doctor of Education and Associate Professor at National Aviation University, Ukraine
Liudmyla Zagoruiko is a Doctor of Education and associate professor at National Aviation University, Ukraine. She has a Master’s in Communication from Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland. Liudmyla is a member of the Department of Linguistics and Social Communication. She is also a board member of the Ukrainian Association for Education Research. She has participated in several international projects and conducted three internships abroad.
Her research interests are equal access to education for all, interculturalism in education, language acquisition and language learning methodologies, and gender studies.
She is the co-author of several edited volumes and the author of a number of research articles. Liudmyla is also on the editorial board of three research journals and a member of IATEFL, the Ukrainian Association of European Integration Teachers and Researchers, and the NGO “Direct Lines for Sustainable Development.”

Tetiana Lisova
Doctor of Mathematics and Physics and Professor at Nizhyn Gogol State University.
Tetiana has a doctorate in Mathematics and Physics and is Professor at Nizhyn Gogol State University (Department of Information Technology and Data Analysis). She has been a member of several international projects (Tempus (2009-2012), Erasmus + (2015-2018)).
Her research interests are in the field of educational and pedagogical assessment and include research on consistency of test results between groups and the mathematical modeling of tests. She is author of over 100 articles on mathematics and educational assessment and has given talks in Hungary, Spain, Germany, and Morocco.
She has been a visiting professor at universities in Sweden, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Greece, Hungary, and Tunisia. She has previously worked as the head of a university science and methodology department and as vice-dean of studies and research at Nizhyn Agrotechnical College. She was awarded the Prize for Excellence in Ukrainian Education and is also a board member of the Ukrainian Educational Research Association (UERA).

A leading expert in comparative education with special attention to alternative education in the EU countries, she is a specialist in research methodologies and data analysis.
She has 18 years of experience working as an educational researcher and research consultant for academic institutions. She has extensive experience in designing and managing projects, in both academic mobility and research. She has worked in ERASMUS MUNDUS projects (EMINENCE and EMINENCE II) as a co-coordinator (with Adam Mickiewicz University as the leading institution), and coordinator of Jean Monnet Module “Ukraine-EU: Transcultural Comparisons in Educational Research” (2016-2019).

Svitlana Shchudlo is a doctor of Sociology, professor at Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University, president of the Ukrainian Educational Research Association.
Svitlana Shchudlo is a Head of the Law, Sociology and Political Science Department, Drohobych Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University (Ukraine).
She sits on the administrative council of the Ukrainian Sociological Society (SAU). Her research interests include sociology of youth, sociology of education, education reform, and quality assurance in secondary and higher education. She is the editor-in-chief of the international peer-reviewed journal, “Youth in Central and Eastern Europe. Sociological Studies.”
She was a visiting professor at University of Warsaw (2015, Poland) and Witelon State University of Applied Sciences (2018, Legnica, Erasmus + Mobility Program). She has authored more than 210 articles.
