Abstract
The introduction of a quota for women in the French Chess Club Championship of 1990, provides a unique environment to study the effects of an affirmative action quota on three levels. We find that selected women improve their performance. We show large spillover and trickle-down effects: There are more and better qualified women.
We find no substantial adverse effects on French male players. International comparisons confirm that these results are unique to France. We discuss the characteristics of this quota and how best to implement a quota with similar properties in other environments.
